Notes: Professionally rebound copy of reprinted early history (1850) of stock trading in London from its origin in Exchange Alley to the Railway Mania. It records the growth in national debt, link to war, service rendered by the City and its corruption. Great manias include the South Sea Bubble and the 1835 collapse in foreign stocks. Herein is much anecdotal history of speculators and intrigue, yet Francis asks, “what does not England owe to men who bore the burden and the heat of the day in the introduction of projects, which once household luxuries, they have made household necessities.”
Keys: Stock Market, London Exchange, Investment, Government Debt, Manias, Bubbles, Rothschild, Barings, Thomas Guy, Lotteries, Tontines, Crashes
