Notes: Well-qualified couple, the authors present a balanced view of an emergent Asia at the turn of the millenium. Had it been written a few years earlier it might have been a little starry-eyed, although the authors were well-aquainted with the excesses of Japan (whose structural problems are viewed with telling anecdotes), and were quick to identify the roots of the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. Also, their ability to hop from the tables of leading corporate and political figures to tougher environment of some of Asia's poorest locales enables a broad and useful picture of Asia to be recorded.
